According to Government statistics, each year on average 10 people die and about 750 are seriously injured in accidents involving unsafe electrical installations in the home alone, this gives considerable incentive to get Electrical work done by professionals.

From 1st January 2005 all electrical work in dwellings in England and Wales need to comply with 'Part P' of the Building Regulations and must be carried out by persons competent and registered to do the work. All but the most minor of work must be certified and reported to local building control, failure to do this could result in uncertified property's being unable to sell as they will not have relevant Building Regulation approval. • Have your wiring installation checked at least once every 10 years by an approved contractor, or straightaway if you are buying and older property.
• Look for a Napit Member.
• Do not use appliances with worn or damaged flexes
• Do not wire flexes together.
• Keep portable mains operated appliances out of the bathroom.
• If an appliance appears faulty, stop using it and have it checked at once.
• Always use an RCD for power tools, especially those to be used outside, this includes lawnmowers, hedge trimmers etc.
  
• Never use multiple adaptors on sockets, this will lead to overloading and in the worse case a fire.
• Consider having a mains linked smoke detection system installed.
